The day you were born…

On this Mother’s Day weekend I want to share with you a very special photography session, no wait, a photography experience is a better description. I am honored to share the story of how sweet, dark-haired Connor Michael was welcomed into the world on his birthday. This is what Mother’s day is all about. That moment that changes your life forever as this warm, cuddly being is wrapped up and put into your arms and your heart grows a little bigger to accommodate him.

I am excited to start offering this type of “experience” for my clients this year. I have teamed up with an incredible writer, Nicole Schmoll, who graciously interviewed Connor’s mama and produced the story of the day Connor was born. We are wrapping this imagery together with the beautiful words and creating an album showcasing this memorable day. My hope is that this is just the start of albums for baby Connor. I also hope that this album is a story starter between Connor and his parents. My vision includes him pulling it off the shelf, snuggling in close to his Mama and asking her to to him about the day he was born. I know he will ask other questions about this experience and the stories will just flow from there.

Happy Mother’s day to all my clients who are a mama themselves, cherish their own mother or are eagerly waiting to join the club. It is the most incredible job a woman will ever have and I thank God each night for my own little peanut that calls me Mama.

On the Day You Were Born…

You came into the world softly, almost sweetly. Your dad was cheering you on like you were the star player on the Mt. Michael soccer team. I was smiling and your big brother Will was expecting your arrival in the waiting room with a gathering of your aunts, uncles and grandparents. Meeting you for the first time was the beautiful, melodic moment we’d all been waiting for.

Before the Big Day

As our second child, it seemed fitting that you were almost two years in the making. We tried for ten months to conceive you and then I carried you for another ten. My pregnancy with you started just like your big brother Will’s – pretty standard. While I don’t remember any strange cravings, I do remember spending the last two months on bed rest.

You were due during soccer season and your Daddy was concerned that he might miss your arrival. As your due date drew near, aunts and uncles brought me meals and played with Will while Daddy was coaching games and running practices. After nearly a week of inconsistent contractions, sleepless nights, countless phone calls and walks around nurseries, we were finally able to check in to Methodist hospital at 192nd and Q on Wednesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.

Your Birth Story

You couldn’t have picked a more perfect day to be born. It was the only day during the week that that Daddy didn’t have any soccer games. That was a good thing; not only so your Daddy could be sure not to miss the moment of your birth, but also because I needed him to rub my back in between contractions before the epidural kicked in. Once the anesthesiologist finished his work, I felt good enough to laugh with your Daddy, give your brother a few big hugs and write some business emails.

After about five hours of story telling, laughter and goofing off, I felt like it was time to push. Around 9:00 p.m., your nurse, Ashley, went to get Dr. Westcott. While we waited for the doctor, we turned on Baby of Mine and listened to your special song. The lyrics filled the air in the hospital room with our love for you.

Baby mine, don’t you cry,

Baby mine, dry your eyes.

Rest your head close to my heart,

Never to part,

Baby of mine.

I was emotional but calm. Your Daddy was the best birth coach ever. He was so proud of both of us. Five to ten pushes later, Dr. Westcott set you gently on my chest.

I admired you through joyful tears in the minutes following your birth. I was so thankful to have that time with you because I knew what it was like not to have those special moments with Will, who needed some help breathing right after he was born.

After they cleaned us up, we brought in your big brother Will to meet you. We told him your name was Connor Michael, which we were thankful to have settled upon just a few days before. Just like Will, we went through a long and winding road of discarded names before we found the one that was perfect for you; Hank, Henry and Joshua were just a few of the casualties suffered along the way.

After Will shared a few special moments with his new little brother, the full waiting room emptied into our room. Your grandparents, aunts and your uncle came in to admire your full head of jet black hair. We bantered on about how you have my hair, nose and eyes, and your Daddy’s ears, feet and toes. Around 11:00 pm everyone left so that you and I could get some sleep.

In those quiet moments we shared together, the last lines of your special song fluttered through my thoughts and came to rest on that special place in my heart reserved just for you. I know it’s how I will feel about you for as long as God gives me breath. You are now, and always will be, my precious, laid-back, uncomplicated little man.

From your head down to your toes

You’re not much, goodness knows.

But you’re so precious to me,

Sweet as can be,

Baby of mine.

St. Charles Borromeo Wedding: Jenna + Keith

Jenna and Keith’s April 21st wedding was an amazing way to kick off the 2012 wedding season. The weather was calm and full of warm sunshine. You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day just like I couldn’t have asked for a nicer couple to work with. These two impressed me with their laid-back nature and kind compassion for others. I can already see how Jenna enjoys taking care of Keith and also how much Keith cares for her in return.

My favorite image of the day isn’t a dramatic posed portrait. It’s this spontaneous image right here taken when we stopped for a quick drink. Their whole-hearted kiss and strong embrace shows it all. And as they chatted with their friends I looked down and saw their hands locked together this way. I can already picture them in 50 years walking down the sidewalk together holding hands exactly the same way.

The day started out at Jenna’s parents house while the girls finished up their makeup and donned their beautiful dresses. I was told after I took these images that the wooden chest Jenna’s shoes were resting on was her Grandparents. I’m so glad to have included a piece of her heritage in the images.

The first moment they saw each other . . .

Their reception was held at The Ridge in Elkhorn and the entire evening was flawless because they had the best DJ in Omaha, TeeRoy from Unique Pros.

A big hug and even bigger “thank you” to you both, Jenna and Keith. You have been so much fun to get to know this past year. I’ve loved hearing your stories and learning about your relationship. I feel honored to have gotten the chance to document this exciting day for you.

Engaged: Bridget & TJ

Let me introduce you to Bridget and TJ and share with you their engagement session from last fall. We spent our time together both in the city and in the country showing this adorable couple’s style. Do you see their contagious smiles? That’s how they were the entire evening which made my job very easy.

I was pleased when they mentioned they wanted to share the spotlight with their two dogs. The pups were well behaved and full of energy just as I expected. And I couldn’t leave without a quick shot of TJ’s truck with the dog kennel in the back. In the words of Kip Moore’s song, “There’s just something ’bout a truck” . . .

Bridget and TJ’s May 26th wedding is quickly approaching and I’m looking forward to spending the day celebrating with them! See you both soon!

Engaged: Jenna & Keith

Jenna and Keith’s engagement session took place late last summer on the campus where they both attended college together, University of Nebraska at Lincoln. They’re both spirited fans of the Huskers and enjoy tailgating together on game days. Even though the evening was a tad bit on the humid side we still enjoyed our time together. They both had me laughing at their little jokes they shared with each other. Our first stop was this pretty little nook on campus where Keith asked Jenna to marry him.

Jenna and Keith will tie the knot this weekend and they’ll definitely start the 2012 wedding photography season off right for me. They have been wonderful to work with. It will be exciting to see them take this next step together as all the wedding planning comes together for the big day. Their personalities compliment each other well and their sense of humor will keep them together for many years. I know I will arrive home on Saturday night with a stomach ache from all the laughing that will go on!

Looking forward to seeing you both on Saturday!

Engaged: Cassie & Mark

Engagements sessions are enjoyable for many reasons but I always love getting to know my clients the best. I get to see how they love on each other, how they tease one another, listen to the embarrassing stories they tell and most importantly learn how they’re planning their future together.

Cassie and Mark were no exception, they are so much fun! There were many times that night where we were doubled over, laughing out loud. They are spirited, humorous and fun loving souls! We traipsed around the downtown Omaha area and eventually ended up at the new Hotel Deco. Great plan Cassie! The modern decor coordinated with your stylish attire perfectly.

Thanks again for a fun filled fall evening Cassie and Mark! July 14th is looking to be an amazing day for you two!

Engaged: Rachel & David

I first met Rachel over the Christmas holiday and right away I knew I wanted to be part of her wedding day. David unfortunately wasn’t with her at the time but I knew he had to be Mr. Wonderful by the way Rachel described him. They both currently make their home in Atlanta but will be traveling back to Rachel’s hometown of David City, Nebraska for their May wedding. While emailing with Rachel about the upcoming engagement session and where we were going to photograph it, she sent me some insight into their relationship and how it came to be.

“An idea, which might be completely crazy, would be to go to the airport! We spent a LOT of time in airports flying back and forth to see each other during those two years, and it could be neat to celebrate our engagement by remembering the huge investment that we made in the first years of our relationship.”

I love how she uses the term “investment” in regards to their relationship. The minute I met up with these two on that chilly February day I could see exactly what she meant.

We began our time together at M’s Pub in downtown Omaha. It was the scene of one of their very first dates together. We lucked out and the same table they had dinner at was open for them to sit down and reminisce.

The familiarity of the airport washed over David and Rachel as we walked in. I could tell that they had been there numerous times. I asked how often they would travel to see each other and they told me they never let it go longer than two months. Rachel told me about the many times she’d pace the upstairs floor waiting to see David walk down the long hallway. The old saying “Absence makes the heart grow fonder . . . ” instantly came to mind but sometimes that absence can just be too long.

Rachel shared how David gets on the MARTA in Atlanta at his house which is a couple stops before hers and he always tries to save her a seat. Once at their destination they deboard and ride the escalator together before going their separate ways for work. David gives Rachel a kiss on her forehead as they travel up the moving steel stairs before they start their day. While on our session together, they routinely fell into this embrace just like they do back home.

These two have a wonderful story together . . . and it’s just getting started. I can’t wait to be with them for their wedding day in David City. There will be much laughter and happiness . . . and fabulousness! (a little inside joke for Rachel)

St. John’s Creighton Wedding: Kimberly + Tyler

The Creighton campus served as a picturesque backdrop for Kimberly and Tyler’s wedding day. Ironically the last time we were together was that previous winter when we photographed their engagement session in the snow. I’m sure glad we had different conditions on their big day. Kimberly and Tyler have been incredible clients to work with. They both are so kind, so thoughtful and the perfect compliment to each other.

I love how patient Tyler looks while waiting to see his bride for the first time!

Isn’t this one good looking wedding party? Kimberly’s color choices looked impeccable on the group. They were all so cooperative while we traipsed around at our two different locations. That’s the luxury of having a little time in between the ceremony and the reception.

The Embassy Suites downtown was a wonderful choice for their reception. Every detail looked amazing while they danced the night away. Thank you for having me along to document your day Kimberly and Tyler! You both have such a sweet, polite charm about you. Seeing the love you have for one another is one of my favorite perks of my job. I am very excited to see what your future has in store.

Indian Creek Omaha Wedding | Alicia + Mark

Alicia and Mark’s story got me from the very first time I met them. Here’s a quick peek at their engagement session and you’ll see why I knew I wanted to photograph their wedding day. I’ve recalled the first meeting to many other brides I’ve met since. Mark and Alicia sat down in front of me and told me about the special Valentine Mark carried in his wallet. He proudly retrieved it and showed it off as one of his prized possessions. And just like he did on that day we met, during the toasts at their reception when the same special Valentine was mentioned he pulled it out and held it high for everyone to see. You’ll see the photo below as proof.

Alicia and Mark’s story is a special one and I feel fortunate to have met them and their incredible family. There were tears and laughter and lots of hugs on their day in September. I felt a closeness that people don’t see everyday. They are genuine with everyone they meet and you can’t help but feel like their friend after spending just five minutes with them.

Indian Creek provided a wonderful backdrop for their outdoor wedding as well as the perfect venue for their fun-filled reception.

Thanks again you two for showing and reminding me what true love looks like. I know you just got back from an incredible warm weather honeymoon. I hope you enjoyed every moment! Take care and thanks for choosing me to document the beginning of your life together.

Orpheum Theatre Wedding: Rachel + Clinton

Omaha’s historic Orpheum Theatre was the backdrop for this vivacious couple’s wedding reception in September. I was thrilled to hear we would have access to such an incredible venue for their wedding day. I met with Rachel and Clinton last December while baby London was still in my tummy. I jokingly assured them that she would make her appearance in February long before their wedding. It’s hard to believe it’s now a year later and I get to showcase the images we captured on their very special day.

Rachel and Clinton make their home in California but Rachel’s roots are in Omaha and that is why they choose the Big-O for their wedding. I really enjoyed getting to know them both at our consultation and during their engagement shoot. I knew Rachel’s impeccable sense of style would be showcased in all the wedding details and of course her wedding gown.

This couple’s “first look” was outside of the Orpheum, under the marquee. How amazing to see your future husband’s name alongside your own on such a brilliant billboard.

Rachel and Clinton thank you for having me along to document your wedding day filled with classic, nostalgic details. The beautiful dresses, exquisite flowers, dramatic lighting and who could forget the vintage Chrysler getaway car! I sure hope you enjoyed your incredible honeymoon in Europe and are loving life as husband and wife.

6 months of cuteness: Noah

Let me introduce you to Noah and his adorable parents. He is going to be London’s future boyfriend, I am sure of it. He’s such a nice mannered, smiley happy, and cuddly little guy! Not to mention he’s pretty handsome too. Look at them baby blues! We met at the park last month to photograph him at the big 6 month mark. I love this age not only as a photographer but also as a parent. They’re sitting up on their own and gaining a small bit of independence. It’s fun to be able to sit back a little and interact with them on their own level.

I was happy to see the weathered yellow caboose parked right in the middle of the grass. Looking forward to coming back next summer and photographing him next to it to show how much he’s grown.

It’s great to know that Noah and London already share a passion for books. See, I knew they’d be fast friends!

I’ll see you all in a couple months when this handsome guy hits the 9 month mark!
